about

Black's Cafe is a recollection of time I spent in West Berlin in early months of 1989 and the friends I was there with. We were there at what turned out to be the tail end of the Cold War, but at the time the political and social situation there seemed as frozen as we were when we ventured out into the windswept, frigid Berlin nights.

Most of our group of young people had been drawn to Berlin by its reputation as a frontier city, an image shaped in large part by the romantic and melancholy images found in the film "Wings of Desire" by German director Wim Wenders.

Looking back, what I find striking is just how quickly we all adapted to the (ir)reality of life in the divided city; what was normal there clearly wasn't, but it took us almost no time at all to get used to the way things were. A testament to our human ability to adapt? Or an indictment of how quickly we reconcile ourselves to injustice when this persists? Both maybe?
